Grado is far more than just a beautiful seaside resort. This island has a soul that stretches back almost 2,000 years. Grado was once the seaport of the powerful Aquileia and later the refuge of the patriarchs from the Lombards. But Grado has another face: that of the elegant seaside resort of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
Why do two basilicas stand so close together in the old town? What secrets do the magnificent Ville Bianchi , where European nobility once resided, conceal? And why is the port, the Mandracchio , the true living room of the "Gradesi"?

If you're hungry after the tour, find a small trattoria in the old town and try the boreto. It's a traditional fish dish from the lagoon fishermen, prepared without tomatoes, but with plenty of pepper and garlic. It absolutely must be served with white polenta. A true taste of Grado on your plate!

Grado has a fantastic concentration of excellent ice cream parlors. Grab a cone and sit on one of the benches in the narrow alleyways of the old town. Watch the world go by and enjoy the "dolce far niente" (the sweet art of doing nothing).

Plan the end of your tour so that you're on the dam (Diga) for sunset. There's hardly a more beautiful spot on the upper Adriatic to watch the sun sink into the sea. Many small bars right by the dam offer the perfect aperitivo to enjoy.
