Ljubljana / Laibach city trip 2026

The ultimate guide to sights, culinary delights & insider tips

Ljubljana (Laibach) is no longer a hidden gem, but a must-see for every traveler in Europe. This beloved city (which is what its name translates to) combines alpine flair with Mediterranean serenity . In this guide, you'll find everything you need to know about getting there, the best parking spots, culinary highlights, and how to playfully explore the city.

🏰 The main sights (and a few secrets)

Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad)

The landmark towers high above the city. You can either hike up or take the modern funicular railway. From the top, you have a 360-degree view that, on clear days, extends as far as the Julian Alps .

Prešeren Square & the Three Bridges (Tromostovje)

This is the social heart of the city. Named after the national poet France Prešeren , this square connects the modern center with the medieval old town via the famous three bridges.

The Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most)

No visit is complete without a photo with the dragon! Legend has it that Jason (the leader of the Argonauts) slew a dragon here. Today, four copper statues stand guard over the bridge – a masterpiece of Art Nouveau.

Besides these classics, there is much more to discover:

  • The Nebotičnik (skyscraper): When it was built in 1933, it was the tallest building in the Balkans. Take the elevator to the café on the top floor – the view of the castle at sunset is unbeatable.
  • Metelkova Mesto: The autonomous cultural center in a former barracks is a paradise for street art fans. A stark, colorful contrast to the baroque old town.
  • The Central Market & Colonnades: Designed by Jože Plečnik. Here you can buy not only fruit, but also local honey and pumpkin seed oil. On Fridays (March–October), the "Odprta kuhna" (Open Kitchen) takes place here – a huge street food festival!
  • Tivoli Park: The city's green lung. Perfect for a stroll to the Jakopič Promenade, where large-format open-air photo exhibitions are constantly taking place.

🍽️ Culinary delights: Where Ljubljana tastes best

Slovenia is a "European Region of Gastronomy". You should try these:

  1. Julija (Stari trg): Upscale yet cozy cuisine in the old town. The truffle fusi and lamb dishes are legendary.
  2. Güjžina (Mestni trg): Specializing in the cuisine of the Prekmurje region. Be sure to try the Prekmurska gibanica (a layered cake made with poppy seeds, quark, walnuts, and apples).
  3. Ek Bistro: The best place for brunch on the riverbank. The eggs Benedict are divine.
  4. Vigo or Romantika: For the best ice cream in town. At Vigo, they have chocolate fountains that flow directly into the cone!

🚗 Arrival & Parking: Stress-free entry to the city

Arrival

  • By car: Via the Karawanken Autobahn (A11) or the Tauern Autobahn (A10). Important: The e-vignette (DarsGo) is required in Slovenia! You can conveniently buy it online in advance.
  • By train: Ljubljana's main train station is very well connected to Munich, Vienna, and Graz. From the station, you can reach the city center in 10 minutes on foot.
  • By plane: Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is located approximately 25 km north. There are regular shuttle buses to the city.

Parking in Ljubljana

The city center is completely car-free. Here are your best options:

  • Kongresni trg parking garage: Directly under Congress Square. It couldn't be more central, but at approximately €2.50 - €4.00 per hour, it's also the most expensive.
  • P+R Dolgi Most: The cheapest option for day visitors. You park on the outskirts of town for about €1.30 per day (!) and the bus ticket to the city center is usually included in the price.
  • Tivoli parking lot: A good middle ground – close to the center and somewhat cheaper than the underground parking garages in the core.
