Discover on your ixpiritour why Pisa is much more than a leaning tower

🕵️ The Story

Pisa smells of warm marble and of the river. In the morning, the light on the Piazza dei Miracoli is so bright that you have to squint – in the evening, the palazzi are reflected in the Arno, and behind the Borgo Stretto, the voices of students can be heard. In between lies a city that was one of Italy's four great maritime republics, on par with Venice and Genoa – and which carries this fact surprisingly quietly.

Why did the construction of the world's most famous tower stand still for almost a hundred years – and why was that precisely its salvation? What soil did Archbishop Ubaldo dei Lanfranchi have shipped from the Holy Land to Pisa? And why is the smallest church on the Arno named after a thorn?

Your ixpiritour leads you from the Piazza dei Miracoli, across the Square of Knights and the arcades of the Borgo Stretto down to the Arno, to a Gothic jewel on the water. Nine stations with riddles, observation tasks, and stories not found in any shop window. Feel the City – your adventure begins on the north side of the Square of Miracles.

🌟 What awaits you

You start where it all began: on the Piazza dei Miracoli, whose foundation stone was laid in 1063 – financed from the spoils of a naval victory. The Cathedral, Baptistery, Campanile, and Camposanto are not here by chance; together they tell of birth, faith, and death. Afterwards, you leave the tour groups behind and go where Pisa was truly governed: to the Piazza dei Cavalieri, today home to one of Italy's most prestigious universities. Further under the arcades of the Borgo Stretto to the river, over the city's oldest bridge and along the bank to the grand finale.

You will discover details that remain hidden even on a second visit – from the sarcophagus of an architect in the cathedral facade to the elephants carved in stone where you least expect them. Whether you have one day in Pisa or a week: by the end, you will look at this city differently than you did in the morning.

🗺️ Your Highlights

  • The Square of Miracles: Four buildings, one idea – and a nickname invented by a poet. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.
  • 199 Years of Construction: The Campanile leaned before it was half-finished. What the builders did then can still be seen in its silhouette today.
  • Baptized for Science: A child was baptized here whose name would later fill every physics textbook – and a chandelier in the nave tells a legend about it that historians doubt.
  • The Acoustic Wonder: In Italy's largest Baptistery, the dome does something with sounds that you simply have to hear.
  • Holy Earth: A cemetery for which ships brought soil from Jerusalem – and a 15-meter fresco that survived the plague.
  • Where Power Changed Hands: On the Square of Knights, the Roman Forum, city-republic, and Medici Order lie one above the other – and on a dark tower, a plaque commemorates a story that reaches into Dante's Inferno.
  • Three Instead of One: Those who believe Pisa has only one leaning tower haven't looked closely enough.
  • The Jewel on the Arno: This tiny church was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt in 1871. You'll find out why on site.

ixpirity - Tips

### Cecìna instead of pizza 🥘
Pisa's street food is a thin, golden-brown chickpea flour pancake: the cecìna. It's served warm from a copper pan, wrapped in paper, and tastes best with a little black pepper sprinkled on top. In the eateries around Via Santa Maria, you can get it by the piece – a cheap lunch that hardly any tourist group ever tries.

### A better view of the gem 📸
Almost everyone photographs Santa Maria della Spina from the front. Instead, cross the Ponte Solferino to the north bank and look back from there: In the late afternoon, the sun is behind the church, the Gothic turrets stand out sharply against the sky, and if the water is calm, you'll also get its reflection in the Arno.

### The evening Pisa lights candles 🕯️
On June 16th, the city transforms into the Luminara di San Ranieri: Around 70,000 candles in glass cups trace the facades along the Arno, the electricity goes out, and the light reflects back from the river. A few days later, North and South Pisa meet on the Ponte di Mezzo for the Gioco del Ponte – anyone visiting in June should plan to experience both.

More information about the tour

Who is it for and which day is it suitable for?

Pisa almost always works as a stopover – the only question is how much time you have. The route is designed to work in any of these situations:

  • Stopover on the way to Florence or the coast: The train station, route, and endpoint are located so that you can continue your journey without a detour.
  • Shore excursion from Livorno: About 20 kilometers to Pisa, easily doable by train or shuttle. You determine your own pace and turnaround point and don't have to stick to a group schedule.
  • Between two flights: The airport is connected to the city center in just a few minutes via the PisaMover train.
  • Free afternoon during your Tuscany vacation: The route is flat, about 3.5 kilometers, without a single incline.
  • With children from about 8 years old: Search, counting, and photo tasks keep their attention significantly longer than just looking.
  • Solo, as a couple, or in a group: Playable with one person or more. In a group, everyone gets their own ticket, collects their own points, and reads at their own pace.

What you can expect along the way

Nine stations, approximately 2 to 2.5 hours of pure playtime. At each station, you first receive the history of the location on your smartphone – concise, with details not found in any brochure – and then the tasks.

These are the types of tasks you can expect:

  • Quiz questions, whose answers are not in the text but on the building in front of you.
  • Observation tasks:counting, searching, looking closely – mostly at details that tour groups walk right past.
  • Photo tasksat the spots where Pisa looks its best – including perspectives that not everyone has.
  • Points and Highscore:at the end, there's a result that you can compare within your group.

The route:Piazza dei Miracoli with the Tower, Cathedral, Baptistery, and Camposanto, then Piazza dei Cavalieri, Borgo Stretto, Ponte di Mezzo, and finally Santa Maria della Spina on the Arno.

You decide the pace and breaks. Between Piazza dei Cavalieri and Borgo Stretto, there are plenty of cafes for an espresso, and a stop by the Arno is worthwhile just for the view. The tour won't run away – you can pause at any time and continue playing later.

For your confidence: ixpirity tours have been played 153 times so far and rated directly in the app by 86 players with an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Pisa is new to the selection – the first review of this tour could be yours.

Tickets, start time, and getting there – how to plan around them

The scavenger hunt takes place outdoors and does not include interior viewings. If you want to see the Tower, Cathedral, or Baptistery from the inside, it's best to plan that around the activity:

  • Tickets:All monuments on Piazza dei Miracoli operate under a single ticketing system. The Cathedral is free but requires a time-slot pass, which is included with the purchase of any other ticket. Tower tickets are tied to specific time slots – book in advance.
  • Tower Climb:294 steps, permitted from age 8, backpacks must be stored in a locker. Allow approximately 30 minutes, including entry.
  • Best Starting Time:before 9 AM or after 6 PM. In between, the lawn in front of the Cathedral is occupied by tour groups. In midsummer, the monuments are open significantly longer in the evenings.
  • Getting There:From Pisa Centrale train station, it's about a 25-minute walk to the starting point – a route that passes the Arno and Borgo Stretto anyway. By car: The old town is a Zona a Traffico Limitato, so park outside.
  • Food on the Go:The closer you are to the Tower, the worse the value for money. Ten minutes' walk to the south is Piazza delle Vettovaglie – that's where the students eat.
  • Weather:The tour is outdoor, and there's little shade on the Piazza. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and a hat in summer.
