Things to do in Vienna: discover the city like never before with your ixpiritour

🌟 What awaits you

The idea is simple: Vienna tour + game. You follow a curated route, solve puzzles on site, and unlock small stories – sometimes historical, sometimes with a wink, often exactly where others simply walk past. A Vienna sightseeing experience as a puzzle rally: more perspectives, less frontal lecturing. And if you're actually looking for a guided walking tour of Vienna but want to be on the go without a schedule and group dynamics, this is a pretty good fit.

Are you ready for a journey through time in Vienna's city centre? This interactive scavenger hunt takes you from the lively Schwedenplatz, through the notorious "Bermuda Triangle", to the magnificent parks of the Ringstrasse.

You will not only explore famous landmarks such as Stephansplatz, Graben and the Hofburg with completely new eyes, but also discover details that even many Viennese don't know – such as hidden coats of arms, the history behind the oldest city gate, or the ancient heritage beneath the pavement. Immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the city, solve tricky puzzles on site, and learn exciting gossip from past centuries.

Whether with friends, family, or as a team event – Vienna is waiting to be deciphered by you!

🗺️ Things to see in Vienna on your route

  • The Cradle of Vienna: Start your adventure at Schwedenplatz and find out why Vienna was an important port city in the Middle Ages.
  • The "Steffl" & Its Secrets: Marvel at St Stephen's Cathedral and look for the medieval units of measurement immortalised directly in the masonry. Can you find the mysterious "O5" sign of the resistance?
  • Secrets of Ruprechtskirche: Visit the city's oldest church and crack Emperor Frederick III's legendary motto "A.E.I.O.U."
  • The Spectacle of the Ankeruhr: Admire this Art Nouveau masterpiece and discover which historical figures glide across the bridge in time with the clock.
  • Roman Heritage & Baroque Splendour: Stand where the Roman Praetorium once stood and marvel at the magnificent Wedding Fountain at Hoher Markt.
  • Imperial Finale: Stroll through the Hofburg and the Volksgarten – a garden that Emperor Franz I "graciously gifted to the people" – and enjoy the view of the Parliament and City Hall.

🕵️ The Story

Vienna is more than just Sachertorte and waltz melodies. Once, this city was the pulsating heart of an empire where the sun never set. But behind the glittering facades of the Ringstrasse and the narrow alleys of the Old Town hide stories that are not found in any ordinary travel guide.

Why is a secret code of the resistance emblazoned on the venerable St Stephen's Cathedral? What ancient heritage slumbers deep beneath the pavement of the Hoher Markt, where Roman emperors once resided? What is the mysterious "A.E.I.O.U." code of the Habsburgs, which you can find at the city's oldest church, all about? And why did an emperor "graciously" gift his private garden to the common people?

Embark on a scavenger hunt from medieval Schwedenplatz to the imperial Hofburg. Solve tricky puzzles, uncover historical gossip, and reveal the secrets hidden between the Fiaker alleys and the monumental palaces of the city centre. Vienna is waiting to be rediscovered by you!

A walking tour of Vienna, or a scavenger hunt?

A guided walking tour of Vienna gives you a live guide and a fixed departure time. This route gives you the opposite: start when you like, linger as long as you like, and decide for yourself how deep to go at each stop. The subjects are the same – Habsburgs, Romans, St Stephen's, the Ringstrasse – but you uncover them by solving rather than listening.

ixpirity - Tips

☕ The best coffee nearby (Graben Station)
If you're at the Graben, it's just a short hop to the legendary Café Hawelka (Dorotheergasse).
Why here? Unlike the opulent palace cafés, Hawelka is dark, cozy, and artistic. Andy Warhol and Udo Jürgens have both enjoyed their Buchteln here. A perfect "Feel the City" for the real Vienna.

🏛️ Culture Bonus: Albertina.
Our tip: Go to the Albertina terrace (free access via escalator or ramp). From there, you'll have the best view of the back of the Opera House and the Burggarten – the perfect victor's photo after your City Mission!

🍴 The largest schnitzel (near St. Stephen's Cathedral)
In Wollzeile, you'll find the famous Figlmüller.
Important: The schnitzel here is larger than the plate. If you can't get a table (it's often full!), go to Lugeck directly opposite – same owner, modern ambiance, but often more relaxed.

More information about the tour

Here's what awaits you on the route

Vienna reveals itself to be diverse and mysterious - not just at first glance. This tour takes you exactly there: to the second glance, to the small detail, to the "Ah, THAT'S what you mean."

  • Downtown feeling, but different:You'll move through central Vienna – with stops that feel like a thread running through the city.
  • Hidden Details instead of Checklists:Inscriptions, facades, passages, courtyards – Small detail, big story.
  • History with an Edge (and a little Gossip):Not dry, but told in a way you'll remember.
  • Familiar Spots, New Perspective:You'll see familiar sights – but the tasks subtly shift your perspective. That's what makes all the difference.
  • More Hidden Corners to Catch Your Breath:Briefly out of the flow, into the "How could I have missed that?" moments.

The dramaturgy remains pleasantly clear: Stop → Puzzle → Next Stop. You're on the right track as soon as you notice: You're looking differently. And you continue on your way more attentively.
